Barber Creek is a beautiful spot and the stone pillars of the old covered bridge still stand. The bridge was built circa 1825,  and a bridge of some sort was in this spot till 1944. When the remnants of Stoneman’s  cavalry approached Athens on the 2nd of August, they found the floor boards of the bridge had been removed by the Confederate defenders.
